Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is a uniquely British event when its "celebrated" the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot against the King James I and Parliament in the early 17th Century.

Guy Fawkes (1570 to 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, was member of a group who planned, but failed, to blow up Parliament - now known as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

On 5th November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King's escape from assassination by lighting bonfires.

Nowadays, British enjoy doing bonfires, watching fireworks and eating sausages and baked potatoes on the 5th November each year!

Remember, remember

the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
We see no reason,
Why gunpowder treason,
Should ever be forgot!
